“Lorraine” is evenly split between mercilessly detailed songs like these and frustratingly blank ones (“Sweet Disposition,” “Rocket Science”), which feel like hollow templates designed to be inhabited by other, less imaginative singers. On “All I Ever Do,” those decisions have consequences:Īnd cluttered up the house with Fisher-Price “You don’t get your picture on a local front page for falling in love at a reckless age,” she sings on “You Get a Love Song,” about making the best of misguided decisions. On “Lorraine” the tough quaver in her voice that’s always been there is hardened the lyrics, even about defiant love, are bitter cold. McKenna, who’d been a steady presence in the folk music world for years. But that plucked-from-obscurity story line always felt mildly insulting to Ms. McKenna as a housewife who’d struck it big. McKenna appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” in a segment that painted Ms. But isn’t that how you move into the mainstream? Sonically the record’s at least five years behind the curve. It’s lean and giddy dance-rock, related to the Rapture and the simple-but-clear aesthetic of DFA, the label and production team. Samson and Johanna Fateman, also from Le Tigre now it’s a trio with two guitarists, Michael O’Neill and Ginger Brooks Takahashi, with samplers doing the rest. The band began three years ago as a production and remix project of Ms. “Talk About Body,” the band’s first album, sounds alternative, but not off to the side it’s not the greatest record you’ll hear this year, but it’s pretty remarkable as a political and musical polemic. Samson, once of the band Le Tigre, is a woman with a mustache singing about female, gay and transgender equality, and her challenge is obvious: to make her issues universal rather than off to the side, to turn word and sound into a party-friendly message. J D Samson, the singer and songwriter behind the new trio MEN that’s in all caps, for emphasis is looking for a place where pop pleasures and political friction can become totally enfolded. He’s still a gutsy, emotive singer, and the music strives to be up to the minute. The sentiments in his new songs are open ended enough to double as self-affirmations for anyone feeling like an outsider. Martin is a pop star before he’s a crusader, and he’s clearly determined to reach a wide audience, both Spanish- and English-speaking.

The album also includes “Será Será” (“It Will Be, It Will Be”), which promises those who feel “unequal, condemned, marginalized without mercy” that “the future now is yours,” and “Basta Ya” (“Enough”), which vows to stop “denying what I want” and decides, “I’ll be true to myself.” In “No Te Miento” (“I’m Not a Liar”) he insists that despite accusations and judgments, “With you I’ll lead an open life.” Yet Mr. Martin pulling a gag off his mouth, then juxtaposes him with gay and straight couples with equal signs painted on their chests. There was no foul language and I can even listen to the music with my kids in the car.The cd was the first Ive bought by this group and I plan to buy the previous cd along with any other future cds they decide to make. The video clip for the album’s first single in English, a lilting duet with Joss Stone called “The Best Thing About Me Is You,” shows Mr. pretty ricky late night special cd The songs were pretty nice and I liked the content that was in the cd.
